Materials

All traditional instruments are made of mostly natural materials.

Shakers and rattles are often made of gourds, dried seeds and shells. Drums are mostly made of wood and animal skin.

Playing Method

In the west, we tend to classify types of percussion instruments according to the way they are played or the way they are built. In Africa however, it is much more important what they are used for. Percussion instruments don't only serve to entertain. They have specific purposes to fulfill.

Ceremonial / ritual

royal / court

Traditional kings and chiefs reserved certain drums and other instruments for their own honour. The fontomfrom is one of these drums. They are played only during processions of the chiefs.
